Metabo HPT 6 Gallon High Capacity Pancake Air Compressor  EC914S Review

Metabo HPT is back at it innovating the job-site compressor with a Pro-Grade, new lighter weight, high capacity compressor called THE TANK. The Tank also called the Metabo HPT 6 Gallon Pancake Air Compressor EC914S weighs 41lbs, is engineered with the power to run a framing, roofing, or siding crew, and is versatile enough to run five 18Ga nailers at a time.

First Impression

Metabo HPT 6 Gallon Pancake Air Compressor  EC914S

4.5/5
Manufacturer: Metabo HPT
Model number: EC914S
Power source: 120 vac
The Metabo HPT 6 Gallon Pancake Air Compressor EC914S looks solid. A single black metal handlebar is centered across the compressor and allows for a solid balanced carry.

The rubber feet are a solid 1-inch thick and bolted securely to the frame.  Two 1/4 inch NPT quick-connect, air hose connectors come attached to the compressor.

The compressor is oil-free and has a manual on-off “lighted, “switch that is protected with a weatherproof rubber boot. The pressure regulator knob has a large red knob with positive stops.  THE TANK has a beefy 8-foot cord, and its drain valve is a ball-cock style for easy, and fast draining of tank moisture.

Metabo HPT Air Compressor EC914S Specifications

  • Single-phase motor
  • 1.3 HP
  • 13.5 Amp
  • 6-gallon air tank
  • 200 PSI [13.8 bar]
  • 5.1 CFM @ 40 PSI [2.8 bar]
  • 4.0 CFM @ 90PSI [6.2 bar]
  • Oil-fee
  • S3 50% 5-minutes on and 5-minutes off duty cycle
  • Thermal overload protector

Using The Metabo HPT “THE TANK” Compressor

On a recent project, I set the compressor at 100PSI and was installing 16-penny framing nails easily. I experienced approximately 14 nails sunk before the compressor cycled for approximately 30 seconds.

Metabo HPT 6 Gallon Pancake Air Compressor EC914S

What I like About The Metabo HPT 6 Gallon Compressor

The most impressive feature for me is the added pressure of  200 PSI, this compressor offers 25% greater PSI than a basic pancake compressor. That equates to 30% more air. The 4 CFMs at 90 PSI allows for multiple framing pneumatics.

THE TANK offers pro contractors a serious next level compressor, which can simultaneously run the following pneumatic nailer combinations:

  • (2) framing nailers
  • (2) siding nailers
  • (2) roofing nailers
  • (3) 15Ga or 16Ga finish nailers
  • (5) 18Ga brad nailers

Personally I like the size of a pancake compressor but have always cursed its capacity when performing roofing or framing applications.

The only thing I don’t like about this compressor is the noise.

Cost

Duty Cycle

All air compressors are built with a duty cycle rating. This rating is typically given as a percentage of the amount of time that an air compressor can be run in a full cycle, typically one hour, that includes the compressor’s run time and rest time. It helps the compressor avoid overheating.

Air Compressor Duty cycle refers to the amount of time a compressor can be operated in a given time period at 100 PSI, and a standard ambient temperature of 72° F.

THE TANK has an S3 50% 5-minutes on and 5-minutes off duty cycle.

If you break it down into 10-minute intervals, the compressor will run for a combined maximum of 5 minutes ON and 5 minutes OFF.

Overall Impression

THE TANK now gives me the versatility to keep a smaller, lightweight compressor in my trailer without worrying about productivity or needing two compressors. Metabo HPT did a nice job with this one.

Larger air compressors make many operations go smoothly on the construction job site and in the workshop.  They improve overall production performance and operation versatility. High capacity compressors are useful for a multitude of applications including finish and trim carpentry, framing, roofing, flooring, siding, decking, and all types of workshop projects.

RIDGID OF150200A Compressor

If you are in the market for a large-tank air compressor that runs at high pressure, you do not have to look any farther than the RIDGID OF150200A compressor. RIDGID recently introduced this new 200-PSI 15-Gallon Portable Electric Air Compressor. The new compressor has a winning combination of portability and power for most craftsmen’s and contractor’s job site air needs. An oil-less compressor makes this part of the RIDGID compressor maintenance free. RIDGID built this unit in a vertical tank configuration with the motor, compressor, and controls on the top of the tank. They also provide a handy storage area on the top of the control housing.

The Right Configuration for Me

I like this vertical configuration for its ability to fit into the corner of my shop and still have all of the controls accessible from the front of the machine. The footprint is only 17 1/2” wide x 18 1/4” deep. When I took it out of the shipping container, I was impressed with the quality of the welds that held the pieces of the unit together and the large size of the metal fixtures that hold the wheels and make the front stand. This is a quality fabrication!

This compressor is ideally suited for the type of use it will see in my shop – but it may not be for everyone. For example, I use a pneumatic sander and it is probably the highest CFM consumption tool that I will use for an extended period. The OF150200A will keep up with my sander and other tools, but a shop that uses multiple sanders, large pneumatic grinders or multiple impact tools will probably run into this compressor’s duty cycle limitations. This unit has a 10-minute duty cycle – meaning it runs continuously for 10 minutes and then will rest for ten minutes. This cycle time may not be adequate for many production workshops.

The Right Capacity for Me

RIDGID rates this compressor at 5.1 SCFM @ 90 psi. The OF150200A has a 1.6 hp universal motor that draws a healthy 14.4 amps. of current while running. I tested the peak current at start up and it was 28.5 amps. for a short in-rush. Clearly, this compressor will work best with a 20 amp dedicated outlet to run uninterrupted. The universal motor has an inherent design feature that gives it a strong starting torque. This feature, I assume, is behind the branding “StrongStart – Reliable Starting in any Power Condition” featured prominently on the sides of the compressor.

For my shop, I can run my Bostich framing nailers in rapid-fire mode, my 15 and 16 ga. finish nailers, my pneumatic sander and ½” impact wrench without running into any duty cycle limitations. In addition to these pieces of equipment, I use a lot of compressor volume blowing off dust and cleaning the shop surfaces with compressed air. To see how the RIDGID OF150200A performs for cleaning, I timed the amount of time that it took, with no power, to discharge from the 200 psi upper limit, at a discharge pressure of 100 psi, to when the pressure to the blow gun reached a 50 psi reading. It took 2 minutes and 34 seconds to empty the 15-gallon tank.

Being curious how this would compare under power, I also took the time to do the same discharge test with the power on and I could not get the discharge pressure to dip below 60 psi with the power running. It was surprising to see that it took well over 9 minutes to reach that 60 psi. mark. In 9 minutes, I can do a lot of dust blowing. As a result, I know the capacity of the RIDGID OF150200A will be more than enough for my shop requirements. If I ever do reach the 10-minute duty cycle, I will take a break or do something different while the compressor recovers.

Fixed Installation or At the Job Site

As comfortable as the OF150200A compressor is in my shop, this unit can also travel easily to remote job sites. RIDGID did a great job making the compressor portable with two large 8” diameter solid wheels and a sturdy handle to make the unit very transportable. This compressor will certainly travel vertically, tethered in a trailer. Also, I would have no concern with it lying horizontally in a pickup truck bed as long as it is secured with straps for travel.

Compressor Controls

The controls on the compressor are very easy to use. RIDGID provided a separate air pressure gauge for both the tank and the discharge line pressure. These are large gauges and they are easy to read. RIDGID centered the pressure regulator between the two pressure gauges. The regulator has a nice locking feature that allows the user to set and then lock the output line pressure.

Ridgid placed the On-Off switch at the left side of the front panel in a recessed area. That placement prevents the user from inadvertently hitting the switch. Initially, I did not like the placement.  After a few weeks of experience, however, I think it is easy to find and use in that location.

The product designers located the tank drain valve at the front of the unit and protected it by a heavy steel plate. It is very convenient to use, operating with a ¼ turn of the large black plastic handle.

Only One Suggestion

I have only one suggestion to make about the OF150200A. I would like the quick connect to extend about ¾ inch father away from the manifold. That way I would be able to pull back the collar of the quick connect without losing a bit of skin on the back of my fingers.

Ridgid 15-Gallon Air Compressor Specifications

Summary

I’ve used all types of compressors over the years. In my opinion, the RIDGID OF150200A is a perfect small shop compressor.

For my shop and my compressed air needs, the RIDGID OF150200A hits a sweet spot. It is a combination of a small footprint, volume and pressure capacities, portability and quality. While this compressor may not meet the duty cycle needs of an air-intensive production shop, it certainly handles my demands. It is a great value for me!

Hitachi EC28M Ultra Quiet Compressor Review

Back in February of 2018, we attended a media event for Hitachi Power Tools. It was during this event that we first got a chance to try out the MultiVolt tools as well as learn about the name change to Metabo HPT. At this event we also got to try the new Hitachi EC28M ultra-quiet air compressor.Hitachi EC28M Compressor-2

Hitachi EC28M Is Quiet

I’m pretty sure the M in the model number stands for mouse as in this thing is quiet as a church mouse. When I first got this tool and set it up in my shop to build some cabinets, I plugged it in and flipped on the switch. I didn’t hear anything out of it, I thought it was broken. The music was on in the shop, not overly loud, but loud enough that the compressor couldn’t be heard. Squelched the tunes to see what was going on but this little guy was just purring along. I couldn’t believe it. I kept the tunes off the rest of the day and couldn’t get over the quietness of this unit.Hitachi EC28M Compressor-3

Perfect For Occupied Spaces

At 59 dB, the quietness of the compressor is the showstopper but it isn’t a one trick pony. The other feature that makes it fantastic for occupied spaces is its suction cup-like rubber feet. When you set the compressor down on a hard floor, the suction cups settle in and keep it planted. It doesn’t walk around leaving black streaks or bump into and mar up walls and trim like some other compressors.

Hitachi EC28M Compressor-6

Suction cups keep it planted

Small And Compact

Out of the box I was really surprised at how small this unit is. With the small size comes low weight too. Just over 25 pounds to be exact. This makes it easy to lift and carry with one hand. I’m a one man crew (most days) and it’s really easy to lift in and out of the truck and into the job site.

At only 1 gallon, it’s really meant for one guy trimming. It will run bigger nailers like a framing gun but will only get about 8-10 shots before it needs to cycle.Hitachi EC28M Compressor-7

Where To Buy

The Hitachi EC28M can be found at ACME Tool for Just $159. That’s pretty reasonable considering this compressor.

Inflators, the smaller cousins of air compressors, are designed mostly to inflate tires but they have a more specialized function. The idea behind tire inflators are that they are more portable than the air compressors. The large compressors usually have tanks and wheels and so on, so they are not exactly built to be thrown in the back seat of your trunk.

DEWALT 20V Corded/Cordless Inflator DCC0201

I recently received the new DEWALT 20V Corded/Cordless Inflator DCC0201. What appealed to me was the ability to be powered off a DEWALT battery and a wall or car outlet.

The battery slides into the bottom of this tool, and if you want the tool to stand on its feet, it can only fit Dewalts mid sized batteries. We tested it with the  5. ah batteries, it does not the larger Flexvolt format batteries.

The DEWALT 20V Corded/Cordless Inflator DCC0201 weighs 5.5 lbs. and be used for high pressure or high volume inflation or deflation.

DEWALT Inflator Features

This unit has a maximum pressure of 160 PSI., while most inflators inflate only to 100 PSI. Correct tire inflation is important for your smooth driving experience and car’s gas mileage.  An accurate gauge is important for inflating your tires to the desired pressure and this unit has abuilt-in digital gauge with auto-shutoff, which allows you to pre-set the unit to the required pressure.

A threaded chuck that provides a secure connection, and a LED built-into the handle provides decent illumination.

Noise

We tested the DEWALT 20V Corded/Cordless Inflator DCC0201 for decibels at ground level of the tools and recorded 80 decibels.  We tested the tool this low because you’ll probably be low to the tool,  on one knee if using this tool.

Accessories

The rubber inflator hose is durable and extend 30-inches from the unit and self-stores by wrapping around the unit housing, and the inflator / deflator plastic hose wraps / stores on the other side.

Additional accessories store directly on the on board, they include:

  • High pressure nozzle
  • Presta valve adapter
  • Inflator needle
  • High volume tapered nozzle

Cost

The DEWALT 20V Corded/Cordless Inflator DCC0201 sells as a bare tool for $99 MSRP. I envision keeping this inflator in my truck for vehicle emergencies but also for inflating wheel barrels, dollies and out tool transport wagon – yes I said wagon. It can also be used for other, non-construction needs such as, inflating tires, pool floats, camping mattresses, and sporting equipment.

Senco PC1010N 1-Gallon Finish Trim Compressor Review

Pneumatic compressors come in all different shapes and sizes. From large fixed shop compressors to even small compact lightweight portable trim compressors Senco is delivering innovated fastening solutions that makes your work easier. The Senco PC1010N Finish Trim Compressor is a maintenance free designed compressor with some awesome features.

Compact Design Perfect For The Pro’s

The Senco PC1010N is definitely designed with the professional in mind. The compact size (14″ long and 13″ high) and lightweight design (21 pounds) allows for easy lifting and takes up less space than a pancake compressor.

PC1010N On the Jobsite

The Senco PC1010N arrived just in time for a kitchen remodel I was in the process of doing for a customer. The PC101N was exactly what I needed to get the trim complete. Doing the cabinet crown molding, toe kick and a few small sections baseboard trim did not bog down the compressor always trying to recover the air pressure. The PC1010N has a fast recovery time and is definitely easy on the ears.

PC1010N Recovery Time

Recovery time on a trim compressor is not one of the most important features as it would be if you were lets say framing but it definitely lessens delays waiting for the pressure to build back up. The recovery time on the PC1010 is between 30-40 seconds. My pancake compressor recovery time is much longer causing more of a delay and downtime waiting for it to build the pressure back up.

Reduced Noise Levels

The PC1010N Trim compressor is really quiet. The compressor runs at 68dBA.  A garbage disposal at 3ft runs about 90 dBA so in retrospect the PC1010N is soft sounding. The PC1010N is great for working inside smaller spaced rooms because you are not going to get all the echoes off the walls.  The kitchen remodel I was doing was a small kitchen with work from home customer. I felt that my noise level was not a bother to her.

PC1010N Manufacturing Specifications

  • Current Draw / Max Amp: 4amps @ 115v
  • Pump: Oil Free
  • Horsepower: 0.5HP
  • Max Pressure: 135PSI
  • Pump-Up Time: 125 seconds (0PSI-135PSI)
  • Recovery Time: 30 seconds (105PSI-135PSI)
  • Tank Storage: 1 Gallon
  • Power Type: Corded

PC1010N Control Panel

Another great feature worth mentioning on the PC1010N is the control panel. Senco included icons next to the Tank Pressure gauge and the Tool Pressure Gauge for easy identification when reading. The small grooved knob is easy to use even with a gloved hand.

Senco also included a nice roll bar style handle that will protect the compressor from damage if knocked around accidentally. There is a nice cushioned handle for comfort while carrying it.

Overall Impression

This compressor is great for small trim jobs such as windows, doors or baseboards. It is not recommended if you were trimming out an entire addition or a whole house of windows. It is geared more towards small punch list style projects. It makes great for shop work as well. It’s lightweight and compact size is well worth the investment.

Campbell Hausfeld 1 H.P. Compressor, Model DC060500 Review

Air compressors are found in a wide range of environments and an even wider range of uses. My first experience with an air compressor was at the gas station helping my dad add air to our family vehicle’s tires. Then there was the excitement as a kid watching construction workers using air powered jackhammers.

Campbell Hausfeld 6-gallon Quiet Compressor

Air compressors have come a long way since then, and date as far back as 1500 BC when people used bellows. Bellows were a common a hand held compressor-like device used to deliver a concentrated blast of air achieve higher fire temperatures in cooking and heating fires.

Air Compressor Uses

Air compressors have a multitude of uses for maintenance, at home or in businesses to get work done efficiently and safely. Whether you’re a DIY-er or a Pro contractor, incorporating an air compressor you’re your tool arsenal makes many maintenance tasks safer, faster easier to do.

  • Powering pneumatic tools, air gun and HVLP spayers.
  • Adding air to tires on bikes and on vehicles
  • Cleaning crevices and tight spaces on equipment
  • Painting with an airbrush
  • Inflating recreational products

Most Common Air Compressor

The reciprocating piston air compressor is the most common type of compressor in any small shop setting or DIY use. Piston-type air compressors pump air into an air chamber through the use of a piston. They use one-way valves to guide air into a cylinder chamber, where the air is compressed and stored in an on board tank.

Campbell Hausfeld 6-gallon Quiet Compressor

Campbell Hausfeld released a new line of piston style compressors that offers a lower  sound output that is up to 50 percent less than conventional designs.

According to the CDC: 1 in 8 American workers has some hearing loss.  The construction industry comes in a second in terms of most hearing-impaired workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) has determined safe noise levels and has made recommendations that hearing protection should be worn within sound levels of 85dB.

The new Campbell Hausfeld 6-gallon Quiet Compressor operates at 68 dBA, well below OSHA’s hearing protection level. This compressor’s motor is super quiet, it has a noise suppressing muffler, beefy rubber motor-frame decouplers and sturdy rubber feet all to help reduce engine vibration.

Campbell Hausfeld 6-gallon “pancake” model

Cambell Hausfeld offers two models, a 6-gallon “pancake” model or a larger 8-gallon horizontal wheeled model. The 8-gallon model can also be used for bolting and tightening.

We took a look at the Campbell Hausfeld 6-gallon “pancake” model and my first impression was that the compressor was heavy. It weighs 55 pounds. It has a top handle, incorporated into a roll cage design but I found that the compressor was easier and more comfortably carried by hugging the air tank close to my body core.

The  6-gallon compressor has an induction motor and an oil-free pump that is designed to provide maintenance-free use.

Setting Up the Compressor

Using the compressor is simple and the only assembly required was screwing in the supplied noise muffler. We turned the compressor on and were amazed at how much quieter it is compared to my Senco, Bostitch and Porter Cable pancake compressors.

Controls

This compressor has a user-friendly design which allows for easy monitoring and adjustment of air pressure, and with key components designed to last up to four times longer, the Quiet Compressors are always ready for the next job.

Two gauges monitor the air in the tank and the tool air setting. The control for the air out-take to the tools is done by adjusting a large, easily operated knob.

Capacity

The 6-gallon model is a 1 H.P unit with a dual-piston pump that delivers 125 max. psi. It is rated at CFM @90/40 and PSI: 2.4/3.5.

CFM at a specified delivery pressure is the most important parameter in selecting an air compressor with respect to whether or not it will meet the demand of the tool your using.

Having a larger air tank means the you have a larger reserve of air at the specified pressure and that can reduce the “duty cycle” of your compressor. Duty cycle refers to the amount of time a compressor can operate at 100 PSI, and a standard ambient temperature of 72° F before turning on to recharge the tank.

Choosing CFM

When choosing if this compressor is for you, make sure the compressor produces the correct CFM at the correct pressure for what you need it to do.  Pay attention to the delivered, not displaced CFM rating.  This 6-gallon model compressor delivers 90 CFM at 40 psi.

Every tool that uses compressed air should have a rating of flow and pressure that it requires.  Some tools, like pneumatic nailers, give you the amount of cubic feet used per cycle, instead of a CFM.  With pneumatic nailers you’ll need to figure out how many cycles you can do in one minute.  For example: installing a fastener every 2 seconds, and the nailer is .3 cubic feet per cycle at 40 psi, then you’d be using 9 CFM at 40 psi.

Duty Cycle

Considering duty cycle is one of the most important things to look at when sizing a compressor. How often you’re using the air is just as important as how much. I use the example of a framing or roofing crew that is installing a ton of nails, and often running multiple nailers at one time. This application requires a larger tank, and fast recover duty cycle.

Tip: Purchase a compressor that offers 10-15% more capacity than you calculated is often a good safety cushion.

Testing the Campbell Hausfeld 6-gallon Quiet Compressor

We tested the Campbell Hausfeld 6-gallon Quiet Compressor in our shop, and on some finish carpentry projects.

We hooked up a 50-foot, 3/8” air hose to the compressor, set the output to 90 psi and used a phnuematic nailer to install 2-1/2” 16-gauge finish nails into 2×4 spruce framing material. After 4 tests, we averaged 34 nails before the compressor would cycle. The compressor then took on average 32 seconds to recharge the tank, before shutting off.

6-gallon Quiet Compressor Specifications

  • Tank capacity (Gallons): 6
  • HP: 1
  • Max PSI: 125
  • CFM @90/40 PSI: 2.4/3.5

SENCO 4.5 Gallon Twin Stack Air Compressor PC0968N Review

My first set of pneumatic nailers was SENCO brand. I used them for 20 years until I gave them to a neighbor who rebuilt them and still uses them today. While my nailers lasted, my compressors did not. I have gone through at least 5 compressors in that time-span. I recently reviewed the SENCO 4.5 Gallon Twin Stack air compressor PC0968N.

SENCO 4.5 Gallon Twin Stack Air Compressor PC0968NThe SENCO 4.5 gallon twin stack air compressor is a 1-3/4 HP, 4 1/2 gallon air compressor that is built like a tank. This unit has a durable roll cage design with steel shrouds to protect all of the compressor parts and four non-slip rubber feet hold the unit in place and protect your work surface. The unit weighs 65 pounds and is a beast to carry.

Designed For The Pro Contractor

After months of field research SENCO specifically designed this new compressor with the pro contractor in mind and based on pro feedback. Common requests by pro contractors is that they want:

  • Faster recovery time
  • Ability to maintain tool operating pressure longer
  • Not trip electrical breakers
  • Be able to run multiple tools
  • Eliminate oil

7 Major Features Pros Wanted

  1. The 200 PSI max operating system produces about 40 percent more usable air than a 150 PSI unit, so users can run tools longer and complete projects faster.
  1. Delivers up to 4.9 SCFM at 90 PSI, providing plenty of air flow and tank storage for multiple construction projects
  1. Dual couplers for multi-tool use
  1. Motor has a 95V start for use on job sites that may only have a temporary electric pole or a generator. This alone is a game changer!
  1. An oil-free pump design eliminates the need for oil and regular maintenance. Unit can be transported and stored horizontally or vertically without worrying about oil spills.
  1. Full roll cage design protects vital compressor components.
  1. Multiple grip points make the units easy to transport and store.

SENCO 4.5 Gallon Twin Stack Air Compressor PC0968NPerformance

The SENCO 4.5 Gallon Twin Stack air compressor PC0968N performs as expected and was more than a match for my finish crew. On a recent remodel we had two finish guns and a flooring nailer running at the same time. You’d expect the compressor to be recycling all the time – it didn’t.

Noise

The older I get the more sensitive I am to noise. This compressor is not a super quiet one it maxed out at 95 decibels at the motor and 85 decibels 16-feet away at chest height.

Improvements

The SENCO 4.5 Gallon Twin Stack air compressor PC0968N does everything you’d want in a crew compressor.   The only thing I don’t get excited about is the weight. At 65-pounds this tool carries some heft.

Price

The SENCO 4.5 Gallon Twin Stack air compressor PC0968N sells for approximately $295.5 here: Senco-PC0968N-Compressor-1-75hp-4-5galr

Conclusion

When I’m in the shop I’m using the larger Senco PC0970, when alone I use the PC0947 or the PC1280, but when I’m running a larger crew or pushing a lot or large fasteners the SENCO 4.5 Gallon Twin Stack air compressor PC0968N is where its at!

RIDGID Vertical Pancake Compressor Review

Around Thanksgiving of 2014, RIDGID came out with a vertically oriented 6 gallon pancake compressor. RIDGID’s vertical pancake compressor was a standalone compressor but was only on the market for the holiday season as a Special Buy and then discontinued much to the chagrin of the reviewers on HomeDepot.com. Perhaps their cries were heard or RIDGID had some changes up their sleeve. Having seen the old one and the new one, the changes are almost entirely in the plastic. The changes are also for the better. Better hose channels, better onboard nail storage, and then a 8% increase in the SCFM @ 90 PSI. SCFM is Standard cubic feet per minute, “the volumetric flow rate of a gas corrected to standardized conditions of temperature and pressure.”RIDGID Vertical Pancake Compressor-3

Form Factor

The RIDGID Vertical Pancake Compressor is shaped in a way the tool world hasn’t seen before. The only thing similar may be the Rolair in that it is also a vertical pancake but the overall shape of the compressor is very different. With the RIDGID, the tank is oriented vertically but the pump motor is also tucked in tight against the tank making this tool very slim for a 6 gallon compressor. This brings the center of gravity of the tool towards the center of the tool, right inline with the carry handle. This makes carrying the tool much less of a burden than typical pancake compressors. Typically, horizontal pancakes of this capacity will rub against your leg when you carry them. Either that or you have to hold them out a little ways from your body. Either way it is uncomfortable to carry over distance.

Despite the tall, narrow profile the RIDGID Vertical Pancake Compressor still fits under one big limbo bar. The compressor still fits easily below the bed rail of a pickup. This is a big deal for any contractor that runs a bed cover on their truck.

RIDGID Vertical Pancake Compressor-5

In Use

So far I’ve used the compressor to trim out a window, interior door frames, and base trim and  base shoe for a room. I also used it to frame out a fireplace and fill a number of automobile tires. In all of these applications the compressor worked as expected. The words, “as expected” don’t usually make for a glowing review but with air compressors they either work as expected or they don’t. This one filled plenty fast and was relatively quiet for an oilless compressor. All the controls were easy to use and of course it was easy to transport. I wish I had this unit last year when I built my shed. It would have been the perfect unit to carry to and from the site every day and run all the various nailers used in its construction.

RIDGID Vertical Pancake Compressor-6

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the market for a compressor, this is an excellent choice. It is a great compressor with a price point that is hard to beat. It’s configuration lends itself well to portability and storability that hasn’t been seen in a compressor of this size. It won’t run a full framing or roofing crew but that’s not who it’s designed for. It is perfect for one or two finish nailers or even a framing or roofing nailer. Handymen and 2 man crews are going to love this thing.

Where to Buy

Normally this compressor is $169 but is currently on a special buy for $149. That’s a great deal.

Ridgid Wheelbarrow Compressor GP80145SW Review

My construction company does a significant amount of excavation work, and the maintenance and upkeep of trailers and equipment lends itself perfectly to this tool. I was anxious to use the compressor and given that this was the largest tool I had gotten the opportunity to review, I wanted to make sure I got the appropriate field testing done to give an adequate review. I really put this machine through the rigors this winter, running it nearly every day in freezing conditions and am confident now to give an honest and accurate review.

The Ridgid Wheelbarrow Compressor GP80145SW is a heavy-duty, gas wheelbarrow type air compressor. This type of compressor is known for its versatility and is used by contractors from all over. The gasoline engine and mobility make this tool a main stay on many construction sites.

Ridgid 8 Gallon Gas Wheelbarrow Compressor GP80145SW

What are my first impressions?

Upon opening the package, I appreciated that this compressor was almost ready to be operational. Ridgid sent the necessary lubricants and hardware to make for a quick set up. This compressor has a huge front wheel and an extremely low profile. The company website says this is to fit in the back of a pickup truck with a bed topper and to protect the engine from impact. Both of these features are extremely handy for carpenters working out of their pickup trucks and the low center of gravity and large wheel makes transporting on rough terrain MUCH easier. I would have liked to see the front wheel axle designed a little differently, as the nut and bolt set up looks like it could work itself loose.

Using the Ridgid Wheelbarrow Compressor

As mentioned earlier, it was nice that Ridgid sent out engine and compressor oil in the packaging. As a tool nerd, nothing frustrates me more than getting a tool that is not ready to use out of the package. As I set out to start the Suburu SP170 engine, I noticed my first major complaint. The engine is tucked so far down between the air tanks and flywheel cover that it is difficult to adjust the fuel on/off switch and the choke lever. This proved to be especially difficult with a thick pair of gloves on. I would like for there to be easier access to both of these especially given how frequently they are used.

The Suburu engine proved to be somewhat difficult to start the first time but subsequently has become much easier with break in. This engine has run very well in cold climates and has had no problem keeping up with the demands my crew and I put it through.

The compressor puts out up to 145 PSI, which is more than enough air for most applications, and never had trouble keeping up with pneumatic impact wrenches, inflating large tires, or running multiple framing nailers.

The air pressure gauges and push to connect air fittings are both of high quality and are easy to use and see. The low profile design, long handles, and over-sized front wheel make the difference on this compressor. It really helped maneuvering the compressor on tough, rocky terrain.

The quarter-turn ball valve tank drain makes draining the tanks much easier, prolonging the lives of your pneumatic tools.

Overall Impression

While I believe Ridgid can make a few improvements to the fuel and choke switches, I believe they have come up with a game changer with the Ridgid Wheelbarrow Compressor GP80145SW.

The Ridgid Wheelbarrow Compressor GP80145SW GP80145SW design allows for unsurpassed mobility which makes this one of the most versatile compressors I have used. With ample power and easy-to-use features, I would highly recommend the Ridgid 8 gallon gas wheelbarrow air compressor (GP80145SW) to anyone interested in a heavy duty, highly mobile job site compressor.
